Wild Things - Chicagolands Vampire #9 - Chloe Neill

Wild Things – Book 9 in the Chicagoland Vampires Series by Chloe Neill
Blurb - Since Merit was turned into a vampire, and the protector of Chicago’s Cadogan House, it’s been a wild ride. She and Master vampire Ethan Sullivan have helped make Cadogan’s vampires the strongest in North America, and forged ties with paranormal folk of all breeds and creeds, living or dead…or both.

But now those alliances are about to be tested. A strange and twisted magic has ripped through the North American Central Pack, and Merit’s closest friends are caught in the crosshairs. Gabriel Keene, the Pack Apex, looks to Merit and Ethan for help. But who—or what—could possibly be powerful enough to out-magic a shifter?

Merit is about to go toe to toe, and cold steel to cold heart, to find out.
So book 9 follows straight on from the end of book 8 Biting Bad and boy is this one political!!!!

This book sees Chicago’s Mayor Diane Kowalcyzk going a bit mad and trying to arrest Ethan for the murder of Harold Monmouth the GP vampire who killed two human security guards and then tried to take out Merit and Ethan. What I want to know is WHY is no one questioning that she’s gone completely insane????
And to top it off it turns out that good old Diane is actually a con artist named Tammy who the old Mayor Seth recruited. Do the law abiding vampires of Chicago out her as a grafter to the general public no of course not lol... no they use it as blackmail. Just love how devious Chloe Neill’s mind is the sups now have the Mayor under their thumb just brilliant.

The supernatural encyclopaedia gets even larger in this book as a load of new species emerge, including Harpies (bizarre winged she bitches), Elves (huge androgynous warrior types) and various other creatures who have all been kidnapped to create the ultimate freak show lol.

I’m not sure how many more supernatural species there are left to come out of the woodworks but let’s have a quick count of the ones that we have seen so far....
Vampires (obviously)

Shapeshifters
Sorcerers
Fairies
Angels
Fallen Angels
Nymphs
River Trolls
Gnomes (they seriously had pointy hats and beards)
Harpies
Sylphs (no idea what these are)
Elves and
Giantess’s....... and that’s just the ones I can think of

The best bits of this book.....

·         The return of Mallory she is a much bigger part of this book and has started to embrace her magic in a constructive way for the bigger good and has become part of Merits mystery solving A-Team.

·         We get a bit more of an insight into the shifters and some of their culture and group dynamics, we are also introduced to Damien brooding dark and dangerous (hell yes!!)

·         Regan ... a new generation of evil = the love child of evil fallen angel Dominic (absolute genius!!!) not sure if her capture is the last we will see of her but i hope not.

·         The A-Team the mishmash group of supernatural detectives who help Merit to solve the crazy apocalypse going ons in Chicago, all they need now is the Mystery machine!!!

The things that did my head in.....

·         The political undertone of the whole book – the vampires are arrested and treated as domestic terrorists and basically just abused by the Mayor and her lackeys. This book felt a little bit more like a social commentary on American politics hidden within a Supernatural novel.

·         Morgan Greer the master of Navarre house needs a slap he doesn’t appear at all in this book and I want him back just so Ethan and Merit can kick his butt.

OK so another fan girl moment but I LOVE this series and now there’s going to be a vampire baby!!!!! All together now awhhhhhhh.
And not just a baby but Ethan for GP president I love this twist it totally leads us into the next book in the series cus seriously how many supernatural crisis’s can Chicago have before I think they would be justified in kicking out the Vampires lol.

Something’s coming for Gabriel the head of the shifters NCA pack (love that they have hells angel style jackets!!) I’m not sure what but the prophecies and their increased involvement with the vampires has to be leading to something and I for one can’t wait.

So in this book Merit and Ethan are hiding out in the Breckenridge’s pile in the country and once Merit confesses the prophecy that Gabriel shared with her we see Ethan become a massive marshmallow at the prospect of Merit having his baby. I love seeing Merit and Ethan in their quieter moments when it’s just the two of them.

Overall book 9 Wild Things is as far as I’m concerned a brilliant continuation of a brilliant series unfortunately I’ve read all of the series currently published and now I’m gonna have to wait for book 10 to be released.... I can’t wait!!!
